Judges ruled in a five to four vote that same sex couples must in law get the same federal rights as heterosexual couples. In a statement President Barack Obama applauded the decision. The case concerned the constitutionality of a key part of the Defense of Marriage act or DOMA as it's known which denied benefits to same sex married couples. David Boies, a lawyer from the American Foundation for Equal Rights said after the ruling: "It's a wonderful day for America. Because we have now taken this country another important step towards guaranteeing the promise that it is in our Constitution in our declaration of Independence that all people are created equal, that all people have the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." A second ruling has also been interpreted as a victory for gay rights. The case centred on a California state law called Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage. The Supreme court ruled supporters of the law do not have standing to appeal a lower court ruling that struck down the law. Austin Nimocks, senior counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom responded to the decision. Learn why gay marriage is a constitutional right and why individual states and their citizens cannot lawfully vote to declare it otherwise.

Anderson Cooper recently interviewed Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi following the Orlando shootings. He confronted her on anti-gay comments and positions she has taken in the past. Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick), John Iadarola (ThinkTank), and Michael Shure, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "On Tuesday, CNN’s Anderson Cooper called Bondi out for her hypocrisy, grilling her about the contradiction between her recent statements and her anti-LGBT rhetoric in defending the state’s marriage ban, when she had claimed in an official court brief that recognizing other state’s same-sex marriages would “impose significant public harm” on Florida. Cooper asked, in light of that work, “Do you really think you’re a champion of the gay community?” Bondi responded that her defense of the state constitution “had nothing to do” with not liking gay people. “My lawyer argued a case defending what the Supreme Court allowed the voters to put in our state constitution,” she explained, adding that “those words have never come out of my mouth.” Cooper observed that, had Florida’s marriage inequality amendment not been struck down, “there would be no spouses [and] boyfriends and girlfriends of the dead would not be able to get information and would not be able, probably even to visit in this hospital.” “Isn’t there a sick irony that you, for years, were fighting that very idea?” he asked her.”* Read more here: http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2016/06/14/3788479/anderson-cooper-destroys-pam-bondi-florida-lgbt/ Hosts: Ben Mankiewicz, John Iadarola, Michael Shure Cast: Ben Mankiewicz, John Iadarola, Michael Shure *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. GAY ASYLUM in the U.S. -- Immigration Attorney Heather Poole shares tips on procedure and issues unique to proving eligibility for gay asylum status with USCIS and the Immigration Court. ASYLUM FOR GAY IMMIGRANTS 0:18 To be successful on an application for asylum based on being a gay immigrant or LGBT immigrant, you must show that you have suffered past prosecution on account of a particular ground protected by statute or have a well-founded fear of future prosecution on account of race, religion, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. If you have been discriminated against or persecuted because you are gay in your home country, you could potentially fall within the political opinion protected ground and membership in a particular social group if you are associated in that group. 1:00 The applicant for asylum must show that the government is unwilling or unable to protect the applicant in their home country from harm if they return. In many countries where the police are part of the harassment of gays and lesbians, it is not a stretch for the applicants who are not willing to even go to a police to try to get protection but the applicant still has to show that there was no meaningful way to get a protection from the police. . . . .An application for asylum must also be filed within one year of your last entry. The only exception to this rule is if you can show exceptional circumstances that caused the delay in filing before this point (the deadline). Your case if filed with CIS will first go to an asylum office for decision. 2:47 The direct testimony of the gay asylum applicant can be heavily relied on because there may not be proof that the police were uncooperative if it was unsafe for you to go to police in the first place. But if you cannot collaborate your testimony, it may not be enough. Testimony from an applicant by itself is usually not enough in an asylum claim anymore unless you can prove your testimony is both persuasive and credible and available evidence to support the testimony was not reasonably obtainable by you. 3:24 If you are concerned about going back to your home country because you are gay, transgender, lesbian or bisexual immigration even if it is beyond the one year deadline and you have not filed anything with the immigration, you still have option with Immigration and the court to file for the political asylum. There is also different types of removal relief such as withholding of removal and the convention against torture and withholding. There are options for you. Talk to an immigration attorney before doing anything drastic. 3:48 About Immigration Attorney Heather Poole: I am an expert in complex family base immigration cases and have a 98% approval rate for the past 12 years. Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/06/18/Gay_Rights_and_the_Politics_of_2008 Journalist Richard Goldstein argues that gay rights advocates should not expect a hypothetical President Obama to be a leader on gay issues, and should instead focus their efforts on affecting change in the U.S. Congress. ----- Efforts to overcome discrimination based on sexual orientation have been part of a more generalized agenda of civil rights. These efforts have been played out in the streets, in major institutions, and in the courts. What do the politics of statewide elections and the presidential race of 2008 tell us about efforts to remedy the effects of discrimination on gays, lesbians and transgendered individuals? The panelists who will deal with issues of marriage and the family, employment, health and well-being to assess electoral politics and the interests of a gay constituency include Judith Stacey, professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, Sociology Department, NYU Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality and author of In the Name of the Family: Rethinking Family Values in the Postmodern Age; Shannon Minter, legal director of The National Center for Gay Rights and lead attorney for same-sex couples in the marriage case recently decided by the California Supreme Court, and Richard Goldstein, journalist and author of Homocons: Liberal Society and the Gay Right. Moderated by Robert-Jay Green, Executive Director, Rockway Institute, Alliant International University. Sponsored by the Wolfson Center for National Affairs in partnership with the Alliant International University's Rockway Institute for Science and LGBT Public Policy - The New School Richard Goldstein writes about the connections between pop culture, politics and sexuality. He is the author of Homocons: Liberal Society & The Gay Right.

The White House has filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of the baker who refused to make a cake for gay couples. The brief argues that the business owner has every right to discriminate against anyone. Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions believe that bigotry is ok, and that we have a right as Americans to discriminate against people. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.   Link – https://www.aclu.org/blog/lgbt-rights/lgbt-nondiscrimination-protections/president-trump-and-attorney-general-sessions Ring of Fire needs your help! This week, President Donald Trump and Attorney General proved just how bigoted they are. They have filed an amicus brief with the US Supreme Court in the case of the baker who did not want to bake a cake for a gay couple. The baker argues that I am allowed to discriminate against anyone I want to discriminate against because that's American capitalism and American democracy. The Trump administration filed a brief agreeing with that baker saying, "Yes, if you own a business, you can discriminate against anyone if you don't believe in their particular lifestyle, what they look like, what they do for a living. Have at it. You own that business. Go ahead and treat people like they're animals because you own a business." I am absolutely sick and tired of all of the stupid little Republican lies saying that small business owners are somehow gods walking among us. They are not entitled to discriminate against anyone in this country. I don't care if you own that business or if you've sacrificed everything to build up this business. Good for you. You still have to treat human beings like they're human beings regardless of their sexual preference or religion or ethnicity or anything else. That's our job as human beings, because that's what we are first, human beings. It doesn't matter if you own a business or if you're a factory worker or a billionaire. First and foremost, we're humans, and we should treat everyone with respect, the resect that we demand they serve to us. But that's not what the Trump Administration thinks. That's not what Donald Trump thinks. That's not what Jeff Sessions thinks. They think that if you're gay, you better pick and choose what stores you want to go to and hope that they will serve you, because we don't think they should have to. We think that anyone who owns a business is better than you, and they know better, and they can do better. That's why they can discriminate against you. We don't care about the LGBTQ community. We don't care about other ethnicities or other religions. As long as you're a white business owner, the world is your oyster, a white, straight, business owner. I guess I should clarify, because we have to start throwing that in now, too. The bottom line is this. Donald Trump had promised us during the campaign he was going to be so good, so good for the gay community. But as it turns out, he is just as bigoted, if not even more so than George Wu. Bush was, and those were some bad times. We're going backwards as a country when we start allowing companies, businesses, whatever, to start discriminating against people just based on who they are. We're literally going back to the s's and s's. Pretty soon we're going to have to have separate bathrooms for them. Oh, wait, we're already having that argument, too. I hope everybody in this country understands how far back in time we are going here. If we continue to go back any further, we're going to be right back to the point where in some states it was perfectly legal for one human being to own another one. That is where Donald Trump is taking this country, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions is right along for the ride.
